Combat Mission Fortress Italy takes wargamers on a journey to the often overlooked theater of World War II, the “soft underbelly of Europe.” Contrary to its name, this was anything but a soft battleground. This immersive game begins with the Sicilian campaign, which unfolded from July through August 1943. Sicily served as the testing ground for the newly reorganized and enhanced American forces as they clashed with battle-hardened veterans of the Wehrmacht, the Luftwaffe, and an array of Italian Army units. The arid terrain of Sicily offers a distinctive experience for enthusiasts of WW2 Combat Mission games.
Fortress Italy transports players to the commencement of the western Allies’ campaign to take the fight directly to the home turf of the Axis powers. The game features a comprehensive range of historically accurate American, Italian, and German forces that were engaged in the Sicilian campaign. Notable units include elite formations like the Italian Bersaglieri, American Rangers, and the German Herman Göring Division. Furthermore, both the American and German military organizations in this game differ significantly from those found in other Combat Mission titles. The game offers four challenging campaigns and 17 standalone battles, each providing intense combat scenarios for control of Sicily.
To wage these battles effectively, players have access to a formidable arsenal, including 38 different vehicles and a variety of weapons, many of which are unique to Fortress Italy. Whether you’re a seasoned wargamer or new to the genre, Combat Mission Fortress Italy offers an immersive and historically accurate experience in a less-explored theater of World War II.
